FYI: Lollapalooza
Let’s check out the quintessential festival from the 90’s, since this year’s line up has been announced and it’s founding fathers (Jane’s Addiction) are getting back together, at least just for one show for now.
- The festival was inspired by the “A Gathering of the Tribes”, which was held October 6 and 7, 1990 at Mountain View and Los Angeles, CA.
FYI: Stone Temple Pilots
I’m bringing back the FYI on STP again, because they’re everywhere right now, because of their reunion and all.
Enjoy the video for “Hello, It’s Late”, which was a gem from their last album, 2001’s Shangri-La-Dee-Da.
FYI: Portishead
Portishead is back from a long hiatus and they should have a big month this April with their current tour in Europe, a headlining spot at Coachella and the release of Third.
Here’s the video for a new track “Machine Gun”
FYI: Smashing Pumpkins Revisited
With all this jibber jabber about Billy Corgan suing Virgin Records, we should take a look back to a previous FYI on the Pumpkins from last fall.
For now check out enjoy old school Pumpkins with the video for “Rhinoceros”, which is still one of my favorite Pumpkin songs:
FYI: The Verve
The Verve reunited last year and this year they’re staying on the road with some big-time gigs, like Coachella and Glastonbury. The band is also working on a new album, so it’s a great time for an FYI on The Verve.
FYI: The Black Crowes Revisited
The Black Crowes seventh studio album, Warpaint, debuted at # 5 on the Billboard 200 Chart. The band’s first album since 2001’s Lions and has sold around 46,000 copies in it’s first week of sales. Not too shabby for the Brothers Robinson. So, with that let’s revisit a previous FYI on the Crowes.
FYI: 311
Since 311 are coming back with a tour and a new album this year, let’s do an FYI on the boys from Omaha, Nebraska.
- Nick Hexum, Chad Sexton and Tim Mahoney went to high school school together and in 1988 they formed Unity, with a keyboardist named Ward Bones.
FYI: R.E.M. Revisited
A lot is going on with R.E.M. right now, as they’re gearing up for the release of Accelerate and a tour this spring. So, let’s revisit a previous FYI on the Athens, GA natives.
FYI: The Lemonheads
Since It’s A Shame About Ray is getting the extended and remastered treatment on March 25, it seems like a good time for an FYI on The Lemonheads.
- Evan Dando and Ben Deily formed the band in 1986 while in high school in Boston and the band was briefly known as The Whelps.
FYI: Matthew Sweet
Apparently the man behind the classic track ”Girlfriend” is coming out with a new album sometime this year.
- In 1983, Sweet left Lincoln, NE for the Athens, GA; he teamed up with a guy named Michael Stipe for the project Community Trolls.
- In 1985, Sweet signs a record deal with Columbia.
FYI: Screaming Trees
It’s a cold and cloudy day, so it’s only fitting to do an FYI on the bands from the Northwest.
- The band formed in 1985.
- Mark Lanegan (vocals), Van Connor (bass), Gary Lee Connor (guitar) went to high school together in Ellensburg, WA; which is 90 miles away from Seattle.
FYI: Rage Against The Machine
Since the reunited rebels will be heading to Australia, New Zealand and Japan this month it seems like a good time to do an FYI on them.
- RATM formed in 1991 when guitarist Tom Morello saw frontman Zack de la Rocha rapping and was impressed by his lyric book, so…Morello brought in drummer Brad Wilk and Zack brought in childhood friend Tim Commerford on bass.
FYI: 1998
Since this is the first FYI of 2008, let’s jump into the dolorean and take a look back at what was going on a decade ago.
- Albums released in 1998:
- Ben Folds Five - Naked Baby Photos
- Pearl Jam - Yield
- Jerry Cantrell - Boggy Depot
FYI: The Best of 2007
I feel kind of bad because I’ve been slacking on new FYI’s, but I’ll get back into the swing of things once the holidays are over.
Anyways, it seems appropriate to close out the year with some FYI’s on the 90’s bands that had a pretty decent 2007.
