Sonic Youth leaving Geffen for Indie Label

The iconic New York quintet known as Sonic Youth have fulfilled their contract obligations with major label Geffen Recoreds, which has/is home to Nirvana, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Weezer and Counting Crows. But, the band doesn’t seem to mind a single bit.
Vocalist/guitarist Thurston Moore told Rolling Stone earlier this week that “it feels great” to be an indie band once again. He added, “The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that’s the way it goes.” Moore also told RS that the band already has a label picked out, but won’t say which label as of now. He also said that he’s “written a half-dozen song ideas” and that SY will hit the studio sometime in November.
I’m actually agreeing with Moore. Sonic Youth were never really a major label type of band. Being an indie band is what their best at, besides, are major labels even relevant anymore?
Also, I bet if the band stayed with Geffen that they wouldn’t be getting this kind of press for beginning to record a new album.
In related news, Sonic Youth will be playing at the TLA in Philly tonight and the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn tomorrow. They’ll then head to Italy in October.
