I’ve been putting off this post for quite some time, and I’m excited to finally see it; remember you read it here folks, because the sound coming out of 61 North is going to be cranking out of your car speakers in the near future.
The south jersey native members of 61 North have spent the last year carving away at a cool little niche of rock music that has many fans, because it’s been around since, oh, when rock started: the blues!
Clapton. SVR. Hendrix. It’s classic, timeless acts who’s footprints have stepped into so many minds, and still to this day are influencing musicians. Listen to 61 North’s classic rock sound, and the first thing you’ll be reminded of is the greats. When is the last time you heard a young rock band from America sounding like a classic rock act?
Then you start paying closer attention. Why is my head bobbing like that. Oh that’s the funk coming outta Bob’s bass, and all of a sudden the uncontrollable urge to get your dance on starts kicking in (whether you like it or not).
I’ve has the pleasure of seeing these guys develop - I’ve known guitarist Ryan “Gooch” Nelson since we were we lads riding the school bus, so it’s awesome to be sitting here talking about his accomplishments in making 61 North a reality.
The band has a new site over at 61northband.com, where you can check out some pics, set lists, vids, and catch up with 61 North news at the band’s blog. An album is in the works that hopefully we’ll see sometime this year - I’ll keep ya posted.
If you’re in the Philadelphia area and get a chance to see these guys live, I highly suggest it. They are on a brief hiatus until late spring, so it’s a safe bet that they’ll be rocking your summer off - trust me, you don’t want to miss ‘em.
In the meantime, make sure you friend them on the 61 North Myspace to hear their 3-song demo!
