At first glance, you might have thought Black Market Radio was an underground radio station. Actually, they are a hard rock outfit out of NYC. With all the shitty rock you hear pouring out of mainstream radio nowadays, it’s the “black market” stuff that everybody really wants and can’t find.

10. The Familiar Voice

If you’re wondering who that familiar voice is, then wonder no more. Lead singer and guitarist Peter Cornell comes from a family of amazing musicians, most notably his brother Chris, who we all know from the bands Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave, and recent solo work.

9. They Want To Bring the Rock Back

One of the reasons BMR exists is to help bring back a sound that has been lost for quite some time. It’s obvious with their recordings so far that the band is gunning for a looser production reminiscent of early grunge (a lot of which is influenced by 70’s bands like Black Sabbath)

8. They’re Not Kids

BMR isn’t a bunch of makeup-wearing, teenage-angst ridden fairies crying about why they can’t get laid. They’re grown up, have experienced success in other bands, and have had the time to mature as musicians and figure out what it is they are looking for. They’re not out to kiss your ass and look pretty - they’re out to rock your socks off.

7. Even Their Label Sounds Bad-Ass

BMR is signed to Slugfest Records, based in Phladelphia. Slugfest is an alternative rock label owned and operated by industry vet Joe Mattis, who has over 15 years of experience working for such labels as Island, Polygram, Universal Music and King Biscuit Ent. The label’s roster features bands such as Alright Junior, Core Effect and Under Your Bed.

6. The Bassist Doesn’t Just Stand There

In many bands, the bassist is overlooked; not in BMR. Keith Mannino and Peter Cornell hooked up in 2000, and wrote the song “Better Than A Killer” with Mannino playing acoustic guitar. Mannino also writes, sings, and plays the guitar in addition to providing foot stomping bass.

Cornell has spent close to twenty years in the music industry, as front-man of such bands as Inflatable Soul, Grace, and solo work. His lyrics reflect the trials and tribulations that he has gone through as an artist and how these experiences have affected him as an artist.

4. Vocal Harmonies

Cornell might be the LEAD singer, but he’s not alone on their album. Songs such as the single “Big Stones”, “Gone Ten”, and the title track “Better Than A Killer” all feature vocal harmonics and interludes which entice the listener to sing along as well.

3. The New Guitarist

BMR has gone through several transitions over their birth in the guitar department, but their latest makes perfect sense: Kevin Hummel, brother of drummer John Hummel, has been added to round out the band.

2. Better Than A Killer

BMR just released their Slugfest debut, “Better Than A Killer”. Originally self-released in 1995 as “Suicide Parlor”, the album has been freshened up by the slick production team at Slugfest and packs a more powerful punch for you to throw at your speakers.

1. They Just Kick Ass

Simply put, these guys just rock! I found out about them about 6 months ago, tracked down their self released album, and haven’t put it down since. And I haven’t shut up about them either! Seriously, ask every single one of my friends - everyone I know has heard of them because of me!

If you’re in the Baltimore area on October 15th, I suggest canceling any plans you have and come check them out at Fletchers; track me down and I’ll buy ya a beer!

In the meantime, check out the single “Big Stones”!
