I set up an account with Ning a few months ago, but never really paid to much attention to it. Over the weekend, two bands (one of which I personally know) and I started playing around with it again.

Boy does Ning have all the features you need to start and maintain a successful social network. The accounts are free to set-up - just choose your ning subdomain and get started. After customizing your account to resemble that of your own site, users will have the ability to join and set up their own profiles. Just like MySpace or Facebook, they’ll have the ability to share photos, videos, make blog entries, comment, tag locations with Google Maps, incorporate FLickr accounts - the works. The best part id that Ning is constantly improving the service and adding new features.
For quite some time, me and Paul have been discussing adding social networking features to our microbrew and craft beer site. We knew that it would be months and months of work before it really got to where we’d want it to be. By choosing to go with a CFWAY Ning network, we can get started with building our network today rather then waiting a year and possibly missing out on an opportunity.
My original opinion of Ning was, it’s not hosted on my server and I don’t own the network. There business model is this: they put ads on your free network. If you want to run your own ads, you then pay monthly fees to host your network. There also may be some kind of revenue sharing as well. While it may not seem a great idea at first, think about how much money would be spent on programming hours, not to mention the time to get it together. By then, someone may have already created a better network then yours. Why not let Ning take care of the technical stuff and share the revenue? This will allow you to explore other revenue options on top of the network.
More importantly, the network is there to build your brand, and the sooner you do that the sooner you can sell them other products or services. If you’re an artist, it means more listeners and more shows to book.
I think there is a place for Ning networks. They’ll be smaller, niche-based and full of passionate people willing to create yet-another-profile to share and exchange information about a topic.
They even create neat buttons for you to use!!
