Creating Your Own Press Kit

Just found a great post on how to make your own press kit! Even though an older marketing technique, in the world on digital marketing, the traditional press kit can make you stand out and show that you’re the real deal. Thanks to Madalyn Sklar and her Muisc Biz Blog for putting together these resources!

How To Sell Your Music On iTunes Using Tunecore

Okay, so you’ve gotten the band together, have some original music written and recorded, and are ready to start selling your music. Now, you can obviously go through with the traditional methods of finding a CD manufacturing company, getting them printed and labeled and packaged and shipped and distributed -uhh! That’s gonna take a lot of time and even more money.

Fishbone - Sunless Saturday

When I was like, oh, 11 I think, I remember my brother giving me some of his compact disks. I forget what the deal was, but I got to pick 3. The first two were Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and The Red Hot Chili Peppers “Blood Sugar Sex Magic” - both very popular albums of the time (and still today). The third album I chose, however, is one of the best albums I have ever owned. “The Reality of My Surroundings” by Fishbone is one of the craziest, zaniest, musically diverse (and vulgar as hell for an 11 year old) albums anyone will ever get a chance to listen to. Here’s the final track off the album.

Some Notes On the “New” Music Industry

The Cobra Punchers recently posted a few notes about the “new” music industry. In their rant they discuss how music as changed into intangible content that can be used to sell advertising much like TV.

Kate Walsh - Internet Music Sensation

Although I just learned about her myself (not a huge itunes user), it seems that everyone else has. Kate Walsh, who recorded her album in her friends bedroom (and actually named said album Tom’s House), recently landed on the itunes top downloads list. The 23 year old has shunned major labels and insists on working for herself (she even started her own label). Kate discusses how easy it is to set up (you just have to get of your butt and do it!). MySpace + itunes + some leg work = music success and all the profits to yourself.

What is Localband?

Got news today about Localband, a new independent online music community. Whether you are an artist, promoter, industry professional or just a lover of music, Localband provides options for you to feed your music hunger. I’m particularly interested in the musician promotion aspects, offering web space where artists can upload information, photos, and Mp3’s which others can share and tag.
