5. Better than Ezra

Better Than Ezra made a name for it self in 1994 with the hits “In the Blood” and the ever popular “Good”. They would go on to produce hits throughout the 1990’s including songs like “Desperately Wanting” and the hit “Extra Ordinary” in 2001. Their last album, Before the Robots, was released in 2005.

4. Candlebox
Who could forget Candlebox? The band was wildly successful in 1994 with the hits “You” and “Far Behind” off their self titled album, and would only go on to record two more albums (”Lucy” and “Happy Pills”) before disappearing for a while. Word on the street is that the band is back together and set to release an album sometime this year.

3. Silverchair
While many have forgotten about Australian rockers Silverchair, their true fans have not, as Silverchair have gone on to continue to make critically acclaimed album after album, and are set to release “Young Modern” in April. Many remember them from the hit “Tomorrow” which was released in 1995 while the band was still in high school.

**Update: Check out the bands new single: Silverchair - Straight Lines!

2. Toad the Wet Sprocket

While having numerous hits in the early ’90’s, everybody throws their hands up when they hear the name “Toad the Wet Sprocket”. Then they’re reminded of the hits “All I Want”, “Somethings Always Wrong”, “Good Intentions”, “Fall Down”, and “Walk on the Ocean”. Like many of these bands, they are back together and touring, so you still have a chance to check them out.

Here is Glenn Phillips playing “All I Want” acoustic:

1. Gin Blossoms

“Hey Jealousy”, “Allison Road”, “Until I Fall Away”, “Found Out About You”, “‘Follow You Down”, and “Till I Hear It From You”; who could ever forget the Gin Blossoms? They’ve been on the road for the past year promoting their latest album, “Major Lodge Victory”.

Hope you have enjoyed this blast from the past. The 90’s may be remembered for a lot of things, but for this blogger, the memories will always be about the music.

Thank jeebus these bands are gone and I hope they will shortly be completely forgotten. You managed to list the top 10 bands that are guranteed to make my brain hemmorage upon hearing said bands. Ouchies.

  2. Caryn on February 27th, 2007 12:43 pm

I miss Harvey Danger. They only had that one hit, “Flagpole Sitta”, but it was good enough to warrant buying the album. It rocks.

  3. Eric Hebert on February 27th, 2007 1:37 pm

Wow I completely forgot about Danger, and am on YouTube right now to listen to that song!

  4. Amy T on February 27th, 2007 3:20 pm

OMG! We have exactly the same taste in music! These were all my absolute favorites. May the 90’s live on forever!

  5. Bob on February 27th, 2007 3:49 pm

What about all of the Madchester bands, like Jesus Jones, Soup Dragons, EMF, etc.?

  6. D on February 27th, 2007 3:54 pm

Yeah. These bands were forgotten. Imagine that. How about bands that slipped into the mainstream just a bit and still manage to be credible? The Butthole Surfers (even though the started in the early 80’s but slipped a couple hits in in the 90’s), Ministry (same deal), Clutch, the Melvins, Bad Religion, NOFX, Helmet, Eels, Prong, Primus, etc. etc…..

  7. Eric Hebert on February 27th, 2007 4:01 pm

YEAH! keep ‘em coming guys. I obviously had only 10 spots, and these bands were the ones I remember the most because they were played so much on our Philly-based radio stations. Long live y100 and 94.7 WDRE!

  8. D on February 27th, 2007 4:15 pm

103.3 based out of Jenkintown was the best by far before they switched formats in the 90’s

  9. Ben on February 27th, 2007 5:55 pm

I would have thought the Lemonheads and Spin Doctors would have cracked the list.

  10. D on February 27th, 2007 6:00 pm

What about DeadEye Dick? New Age Girl rocked, even made it onto the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack.

  11. Graves on February 27th, 2007 6:08 pm

Bush (X) and Wide Mouth Mason. I saw Wide Mouth last year in a small bar like venue and they were fantastic a must see if they in your area.

  12. colinjay on February 27th, 2007 6:18 pm

    the toadies. ’nuff said.

  13. thomascirca on February 27th, 2007 6:33 pm

hey i think you’re forgetting RATM. those guys rocked and they don’t get any credit now. i totally agree with your list otherwise

  14. UglyShirts on February 27th, 2007 6:48 pm

Better Than Ezra’s on the list? Wow. I’d hardly categorize them as “Forgotten”. They’ve been doing pretty well, actually. I’ve seen them 56 times in the last 10 years, and they usually sell out good-sized clubs.

See, they played it smart. Instead of spending their advances on hookers and blow, they invested in real estate, small businesses, and their own recording studio. Their singer/songwriter/guitarist Kevin Griffin wrote high-charting (and revenue-generating) singles for other artists like Howie Day, Missy Higgins, Debbie Harry, and Meatloaf. That way, when their idiot major dumped them, they said, “No sweat”. They had the wherewithal to form their own label. And because they already owned their own studio, they didn’t have to stop just because they got “fired”.

So, ‘where are they now’? Well, they’re still touring, and putting out really, really good records for their extremely-loyal fanbase. And, whaddaya know? It’s working. They haven’t had to quit like so many of their contemporaries when the labels moved on to the next flavor of the month. They still do a few hundred dates a year. They released a greatest hits, a live CD, and a concert DVD that all did well, and they’ve even managed to chart a few singles in the last few years, despite distribution deals that screw them. And through it all, they’ve remained humble, friendly, approachable, and one of the best damned live bands you’d ever want to see.

Better Than Ezra’s “forgotten”? Tell it to the crowds who sell out the Chicago House of Blues two weekend nights in a row every few months. I’m there. And dozens of other places all over the country.

  15. mcaro on February 27th, 2007 7:07 pm

90’s bands were the best, now we have only stupid music!!!

  16. MCEE on February 27th, 2007 7:08 pm

    where are the Toadies?!
one of the best bands everrr

  17. afdaf on February 27th, 2007 7:41 pm

those bands sucked anyways, love live axl rose!

  18. rob on February 27th, 2007 8:04 pm

Another thing struck me watching these–the very act of WATCHING. What happened to the decent alt rock video genre???? I guess down the shitter like MTV. Its a loss.

  19. kenny on February 27th, 2007 8:08 pm

harvey danger is awsome. 90’s rule

  20. Tyler on February 27th, 2007 8:12 pm

I’ll throw a few more into the mix:

    Athenaeum
    Bush
    Fastball
    Lit
    Third Eye Blind
    Quicksand

  21. john on February 27th, 2007 8:35 pm

    mighty bosstones

  22. Daniel on February 27th, 2007 9:08 pm

Silverchair are still around and remain very popular in Australia. They have a new single out and are releasing a new album soon.

    http://www.chairpage.com/

  23. Alex on February 27th, 2007 9:17 pm

I agree with most of your bands. But I think Bush should have been somewhere on your list. With early stuff like Everything Zen, Comedown, Machinehead, Glycerine, Greedy Fly and Swallowed, they rocked. Most people don’t even remember their albums The Science of Things, or Golden State, of which the hits The Chemicals between us and The People that we love came. Just thought I would mention.

  24. loki on February 27th, 2007 9:29 pm

good list, i never liked #9 though

i would’ve mentioned Days of the New if it was my list lol

  25. jlo on February 27th, 2007 10:27 pm

I am so afraid of the day when they start having 90’s night at the clubs or the Greatest hits of the 90’s albums.

  26. Ben Dover on February 27th, 2007 10:41 pm

Oh man some great stuff here. Lol at all the people who think this music’s lame.

  27. Staci on February 27th, 2007 11:42 pm

I never thought about how much the area we live in influences the music we listen to. Before IPODS the radio was our way of transmitting songs-imagine that. What we heard here in the Philly area was what we got. I have to agree and disagree with some comments..I think the message that Eric was trying to send was some of these great “few hit wonder” bands. I would not classify Bush in this category at all. I would though…if the list continued…put Bosstones on this list.

  28. nick on February 27th, 2007 11:43 pm

    cake, what about cake?

  29. jeebus walks on February 28th, 2007 12:53 am

Bush and the Toadies should’ve topped the list.
Esp given the fem rock twins at 1 and 2 on the list.

And was there any band more popular with a dead lead singer than Sublime?

Seven Mary Three bears mentioning also.

    Most importantly…
What’s up with the total overlook of Creed? Who can make it through the day without the inspiration of the God that is Scott Stapp? I even heard that he did his own levitation in the video for “Higher.”

  30. dru on February 28th, 2007 1:09 am

    primus sucks!

  31. Keith on February 28th, 2007 1:14 am

I know top list are always swamped with people saying what they would have put in, and yes this is one of those comments. So without further ado. Where is the Our Lady Peace video? I mean come on, “Clumsy,” Superman’s Dead,” and “Carnival.” Some seriously edgy stuff back then. And if you ask me (which no one did, but if you don’t get the point by now, I don’t care.) I think they have to be one of the most downtrodden grunge bands, and no one ever acknowledges their rise and fall among the other 90’s artists. Bring this music back. Screw this over sensitive new age crap.

  32. Jono on February 28th, 2007 1:17 am

Im surprised Roxette isnt on here. They were great in their time, dont hear too much from them now, at least not in north america.

  33. jjones on February 28th, 2007 1:36 am

Great list, although I do think that 3eb (the absolute slowest album producers in the world) and the Toadies (who are doing some shows next month in TX) should have been in there somewhere. I could pretty much create the soundtrack of my high school career from those two bands alone. Great stuff though!

  34. Blah on February 28th, 2007 1:48 am

    Blind Melon.

  35. Terry on February 28th, 2007 2:05 am

Blind Melon would fit but they were all about the voice, and when the voice dies before you truly are appreciated as a band you can’t have a future.
What a waste of glorious talent.
And “no rain” was not their best work, only their best “seller”

  36. mike on February 28th, 2007 2:21 am

    what about The Cranberries?

  37. btwong on February 28th, 2007 2:24 am

yep, the chair are still around, and they still have a big following.

  38. Desiree on February 28th, 2007 2:25 am

    Love the entire list.

Sure, a few great ones were left out (Bush, Blind Melon, Seven Mary Three…etc.) but I miss this music more than I thought possible.

I loved seeing Toad the Wet Sprocket on the list. It seems anytime I mentoned them people say “Toad the…what?”

I agree with Keith….”Screw this over-sensitive new age crap”

I’ll take the dirty hair and plaid shirts any day.

  39. evan on February 28th, 2007 2:31 am

…And how about the Meat Puppets, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, Sponge, Presidents of the United States of America, etc. The list could go on forever.

  40. Michael Johnson on February 28th, 2007 2:57 am

These are good, but I have to add a few more. Some are forgotten, although some were never very well known in the first place:

    Self
    Slint
    Failure
    The Lemonheads
    Filter
    Garbage
    Jellyfish
    Matthew Sweet
    Refused
    Sunny Day Real Estate

  41. Peggy Scott on February 28th, 2007 5:13 am

You know what??? I totally disagree with the idea that Better Than Ezra is a 90’s has-been group. They have been touring constantly since the release of Before The Robots and are still attracting sell out crowds….you should take them off your 90’s list just due to these facts alone….have you even listened to their last release that you even mentioned in your nice little write up??? I’ll bet not….oh, and by the way—how can this band be on the forgotten list when I just discovered them in 2006??? Have an answer for that??? I’ll wait…..!

  42. Eric Stayer on February 28th, 2007 7:19 am

What about one of the greatest overlooked 90s band ‘the charms’.
    thecharms.com

  43. Eric Slayer on February 28th, 2007 7:20 am

What about ‘the charms’ - http://www.thecharms.com

  44. brian rytback on February 28th, 2007 8:47 am

Did someone say Axl? what a turd.Oh I ment a talentless turd. Some of the bands mentioned really rocked (others sucked)still entertaining list though.Today’s hip hopity crap sucks it touches all aspects of music even so called metal and it needs to DIE!!!At least 90’s music still had that old fashined rock feel.can we will we ever get back to good rock without this culturized hip hop rapping crap (Lincoln park)no talent garb?If you are an American Idol fan sorry for the previous statements.LET’S GET BACK TO ROCKING Sighend am I wrong?

  45. Dan on February 28th, 2007 9:31 am

I think some of you who are saying he forgot RATM, Bush, and Days of the New are missing the point of this post. This is a list of FORGOTTEN bands, not 90’s LEGENDS or “Best bands of the 90’s”. You’re supposed to look at this list, and be like, “oh yea, I forgot about those guys…” hence the title.
btw, I forgot about Harvey Danger, too. They should replace Silverchair on the list, cause I still hear that damn “Tomorrow” song on the radio all the time and I hate it.

  46. Pete on February 28th, 2007 9:49 am

I own albums by 7 of the 10 bands mentioned. At least, I did until my car was broken into those 3 times. Better Than Ezra and Soul Asylum are probably my favorites on the list - I’ve seen BTE in concert on 3-4 occasions and they are fantastic. And still make great music.

  47. Mike D on February 28th, 2007 10:04 am

3 words… Urban Dance Squad… any band that can redux “Deeper Shade of Soul” in a skate pool is alright with me.

  48. Josh on February 28th, 2007 11:30 am

What a great list. I miss those days, good times. It was great to like altertantive rock in the 90’s. Everything has changed now unfortunatly. Another band I like a lot and I loved in the 90’s was The Offspring, and Bush. For all of you who like these bands and more you’ve gotta get or download Buzz Balads. Great compilation of 90’s alternative rock.

  49. Kelly on February 28th, 2007 11:35 am

I think there is a reason these bands were forgotten….I am sorry, but this music sucks. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins…now that’s music from the 90’s.

  50. Tad B on February 28th, 2007 11:35 am

Some of my favorite bands. None forgotten though, I own a cd of most of them, and just went last year to see Candlebox in Ft Walton bch.

  51. Ariel on February 28th, 2007 12:05 pm

Toadies deserves to be up there. And what about The Greg Kihn Band? They were maybe a one hit wonder…

  52. niles on February 28th, 2007 12:08 pm

the only decade worse than the 80s was the 90’s face it they all suck. but wait! when the 00’s are over it will top them all as the worst decade ever…

  53. Love my I Pod on February 28th, 2007 12:33 pm

Also remember the Stone Roses ,with hits like Love Spreads, which was a great song, and Eric Johnson with clifts of dover. 90s music over 80s any day of the week….

  54. sTaLkEr on February 28th, 2007 1:22 pm

Well Collective Soul is good, so is Silverchair and Better than Ezra. Sponge was alright, but to list the Gin Blossoms as your top forgotten band was just lame as hell. They suck, they always will. Nobody likes pussy rock. Once grunge was done so was rock music really. There still are a few good ones around. Rest in peace Layne Staley.

  55. Mel on February 28th, 2007 1:35 pm

I haven’t forgot most of these bands! In fact, Better Than Ezra is one of my all time faves. Maybe even a top 5.

  56. Staci on February 28th, 2007 1:44 pm

I was humming “peaches” in my head when I also thought that the Presidents of the United States of America could also be on this list. I agree.

  57. haha on February 28th, 2007 2:01 pm

The reason why these bands are forgotten is that they all suck. Some things are best left forgotten.

  58. Tee on February 28th, 2007 2:21 pm

Few replies to different things I’ve read.
I actually just saw Harvey Danger recently at a small bar venue.
They’re kinda fantastic, still touring and putting out albums.

    - B. …I miss Stabbing Westward. What happened to them?

And I gotta agree with Stalker, Gin Blossoms were kinda pussy rock (and I’m a chick). I can’t even take hearing their songs today (cause you know some asshole at the bar has to be slick, thinking he’s cool and put on that totally retro song that everyone knows but he’s so cool he still listens to it in his mom’s basement, where his still masterbates over the piece of flannel shirt he managed to rip off of Eddie Vedder, the time he saw them in concert and fell to the ground crying…)

    …Wait..where was this going?
    Long live post apoc-grunge rock.

  59. bribriny on February 28th, 2007 3:43 pm

did i miss the Spin Doctors?? They should be on there too

  60. mighty on February 28th, 2007 5:10 pm

WDRE was 103.9. i never remember it being
    94.7.
Also. these bands rock. i cover 6 of them.

  61. Don on February 28th, 2007 5:43 pm

What about Veruca Salt? You know you can’t fight the seether, I mean come on why even try?

  62. enternamehere on February 28th, 2007 5:44 pm

Here are a few more that I think should be added to this

    Hum
    Quicksand
    For love not lisa
    The Godmachine
    Rocket from the Crytp
    Neds Atomic Dustbin
    Mystery Machine
    Swervedriver
    Machines of loving Grace
    The Afghan Whigs
Failure - By far one of the best bands from the 90s and they still have a strong following and influence today

  63. Corey on February 28th, 2007 7:20 pm

Maybe they’re not that forgotten since Greg Dulli continues to rock on both solo and in The Twilight Singers, but I can’t believe noone mentioned The Afghan Whigs- who for those in Philly put on an excellent show at the TLA back in ‘96. For those who need a refresher, here’s a great fansite for all things Whigs-related: http://www.summerskiss.com/

  64. nomad19 on February 28th, 2007 9:58 pm

Collective Soul has a new cd coming out this May/June o7. They never fail to put on a high energy rocking ass show.

Much better music than crap out now for sure!

  65. Josh on February 28th, 2007 10:29 pm

Man, this list is a good cross-section of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Add PJ Harvey and Mad Season to this list and you’ve basically just summed up the summer of ‘95 for me.

  66. Lee on February 28th, 2007 11:38 pm

The ’90’s would have been cool, if it didn’t SUCK so much! OK, Nirvana, and Bush, AND THAT’S IT! If anyone out there can say ANY band is better than Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Black Sabbath, Jefferson Airplane, Cream,(anyone notice a pattern here?) etc. That’s right. For the most part, Rock died in 1980. Throw in Mettallica, and that’s it. Period. BLIND FUCKING MELON? Please! SPIN DOCTORS? (retch).

  67. tinfoil on March 1st, 2007 10:01 am

Ahh the memories. Some excellent examples of post-grunge/pop-rock artists. Some points of note on various artists mentioned both in the list and in comments.

Silverchair, like Collective Soul, is still putting out music, but Daniel Johns’ continuing health problems have made things very difficult (some sort of arthritis along with a host of other things).

Same with Ministry. Just heard some of their latest and I was pleased with it.

    Missing bands:
    King Missile
    Placebo
    Neds Atomic Dustbin
    Bush
    The Cranberries (!!)
    Econoline Crush
    Eve 6
    Everclear
    Faith No More
    Garbage
    Live (maybe)
    Holly McNarland
    Orgy
    P.O.T.U.S.A.

The 90’s post-grunge era was definatly a tough one for fans. Grunge polarized many people (for and against) and with the popularity of grunge and all the me-to bands that followed it, grunge fans were quite litteraly swimming in their own crapulence - there was just soo damned much of it. The people not into grunge were largely forgotten as the recording industry tried to capitalize on grunge. That time was so frenzied and energetic that when grunge finally crashed, the void was filled with competant bands that were somewhat less colourfull as the acts that preceeded them. Post-grunge acts were cleaner, less noisy and less controversial. They didn’t OD with the same startling frequency as the grunge acts, they weren’t in the news nearly as often.

While there were many good post-grunge acts both in the list proper and in the comments, it was a sterile time for the industry, one that they have yet to *really* recover from.

  68. Big Frank on March 1st, 2007 1:42 pm

Crash Test Dummies (MMMMMmmm……. Ew.) They’re actually putting out albums, last I heard.

    Proclaimers?

  69. Mark on March 1st, 2007 5:07 pm

This list makes my head hurt. There is definitely a reason these bands have been forgotten.

  70. Love my I Pod on March 1st, 2007 5:11 pm

Fastball, Aerosmith was big still, Cake, Butthole surfers, beastie boys, as much as I wanted to hate them there songs could get you going,

  71. JM on March 1st, 2007 8:24 pm

A rather subjective list, I wouldn’t state your opinion’s as facts next time. Vertical Horizon’s shouldn’t be on this list, all of their hits came in this decade.

This list is pretty weak. Bands that are forgotten from this period that I would put on the list are:

    Failure
    Hum
    Self
    Monster Magnet
    Urge Overkill
    Catherine Wheel
    Maids of Gravity
    Quicksand
    Meat Puppets
    Faith no More

there’s a few that come to mind.

  72. Eric Hebert on March 1st, 2007 8:57 pm

Oh, come on dude. It’s a top 10 list, so of course it’s subjective. I included VH ’cause they started playing in ‘92. I’ll agree that they’re hits really didn’t take off until 00 (the album was released in 99), but that’s not the point. The point is that they’re still a 90’s band, and you should check them out.

  73. neemie on March 2nd, 2007 3:59 am

omg…i listened to all of these bands my freshman year of high school. i still listen to the toadies.

  74. Simon on March 2nd, 2007 6:46 am

Silverchair have been ignored, and thus forgotten, despite making better and better music.
Im glad you know that they havn’t died Eric lol. But if you (not YOU, but the other posters) still think of them as teen grungers, and that there was a reason they were forgotten, you should probably check out what they have done. Their albums are far more adventurous than many bands these days..

Daniel is healthier than ever now, theyre about to release their new album “Young Modern” in Australia in a month. Also they just did a small sold out tour of NY and LA, as well as Toronto. Im assuming you’re all in America. If the promotion is done properly, expect to hear a lot more of them in the mid to latter months of this year.

Sorry for the essay, im just a big fan and the whole thing about them being ignored and cemented to that mid-90’s image is just unfair when so many boring, trite, shit bands are huge in the US.

  75. Adam on March 2nd, 2007 11:32 am

Did Everyone Forget about Blind Melon?

  76. Matthew on March 2nd, 2007 2:57 pm

    Marcy Playground

    Hum

    The Toadies

    Cake

Those should have been included for sure. Better Than Ezra is not forgotten at all!

I’m a rock dj though and do a 90’s set on one of my nights that lasts about 2 hours usually, so I could go on about it all day. It was great being in my teens during the 90’s, that’s for sure. There was a day when Weezer didn’t suck…

incredible !! i can’t believe i missed the 90’s just like that, tnx a million for this listing ,I’ll be sure to listen to these bands from now on

  79. Matt on March 3rd, 2007 3:58 am

    Did anybody mention Hole yet?

  80. otcconan on March 3rd, 2007 4:20 am

    What? No Pantera?

  81. Jessica on March 3rd, 2007 6:26 am

I remember all these bands… rock on!!!

  82. McCrocodile on March 3rd, 2007 8:56 am

I, personally, would replace Toad The Wet Sprocket and Gin Blossoms with Spacehog (been mentioned a few times by other posters) and one that has not been mentioned at all…Oleander. I mean, who can forget Why I’m Here? And, I do know that they didn’t get their recognition until LATE 90’s, but they were formed in ‘95. Definitely worth putting them in the list.
On another note, I do have a problem with putting Collective Soul in the list and not Bush. I don’t understand how either Bush isn’t on the list, or why CS is. They have even outlasted Bush in the long run, and yet CS makes the list. Bush hasn’t put an actual studio album out in almost 6 years. I know both receive constant airplay around here, so they are both not forgotten here. So, to replace CS in this list, I would put in POTUSOA or Blind Melon. Sorry for writing a big post.

  83. fukoff on March 4th, 2007 2:23 am

complete bullshit… silverchair do not deserve to be on that list… who the fuck cares if they are forgotten in america… everywhere else seems to remember them quite well. in fact, all the american shows that the band just completed sold out in minutes with no advertising what-so-ever… does that sound like a forgotten band to you? hmm, didnt think so

i only know of 2 other bands in that list, which just proves that silverchair should not be part of it, not in the very least no.3!

in australia, each silverchair album has debuted at no.1 and gone on to sell approximately 4x platinum.

  84. Don on March 4th, 2007 12:59 pm

The fact that Better Than Ezra is on the list shows the frivilous, unfounded nature of it.

  85. gregory on March 5th, 2007 12:50 am

    The Smiths

  86. John on March 5th, 2007 4:42 am

Man, you really brought back a lot of great memories for me, for that I am truely grateful. It is strange how you can remember so much of your past just by listening to music. The 90’s were awesome, I really miss the originality. Nowadays music is just a business filled with a bunch of bureacratic nonsense. Not to be an ass but Better than Ezra still does a lot of stuff. I personally dont like them much though…

  87. Dave Mason on March 5th, 2007 5:42 am

i don’t know about silverchair, they were cool and all but they only really had one song.

  88. migsambo on March 5th, 2007 10:00 am

    New Radicals

  89. dardadrod on March 5th, 2007 5:43 pm

This reads as a list of reasons we’re glad the 90’s are dead and gone. As in any decade, there was a lot of worthwhile music and art. This stuff scrapes the bottom of the “repulsive” barrel.

  90. hbomb189 on March 5th, 2007 6:22 pm

I love seing all the posts on Better Than Ezra, They are my favorite band all time. Its good to know I’m not the only one to know they never went away. I saw them “open” for collective soul recently And they just eclipsed them.

  91. blueeyes on March 5th, 2007 8:42 pm

The 90s…. man I miss it all. I grew up in the 80s, but turned 21 in the 90s so I guess I had the best of both worlds. I saw a few negative comments about the music in the 90s. To those individuals I say KISS MY ASS. Just because you are too young or too stupid to dismiss A WHOLE DECADES WORTH OF MUSIC must mean you are not much of a music lover. How could anyone say “I didn’t like any song from a whole decade??!!!” I think someone with an IQ of around room temperature. To those who appreciate music as a whole, (not just the mainstream crap) I say ROCK ON!!! Remember guys, whether you like it or not, the music from the 90s influenced the music that is around now. So if you hate 90s music but like the music now, then keep an open mind. If you hate the music now, then crawl into a hole and stay there for the sake of the rest of human-kind.

  92. blueeyes on March 5th, 2007 8:58 pm

    Does anyone remember Failure??

  93. Trent on March 6th, 2007 4:43 pm

I think it’s fair to say that Pavement deserves a shout-out.

  94. Stevo on March 6th, 2007 10:27 pm

Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive…shoegaze/dream pop bands of the early 90s. “Sweetness and Light” by Lush is an amazing pop song, MBValentine - loads of swirling guitars making a beautiful mess. I also grew up in the 80s and spent my 20s in the Nineties but gimme the 90s nostalghia anytime, even the crap I only heard over Store 24 p.a.’s or diner radios. Piss on the 80s, I listened to metal and punk to get through them. Long live the Slacker!

  95. Max on March 7th, 2007 12:48 am

Third Eye Blind is probably the biggest one he missed. They probably aren’t as forgotten as he was looking for though.

  96. Rockon90s on March 7th, 2007 1:43 am

I dont know what all this talk of silverchair being the greatest band ever is all about. That single they released recently was the gayest thing i have ever seen (and heard). What happend to the days when they actually made good music? I think the silverchair that made “Tomorrow” would like to come into the future and beat the shit out of itself. I don’t know, maybe its me being american and all.

  97. zach on March 8th, 2007 12:49 am

Retards Blind Melon was a hell of a lot more than a voice they were a really tight BAND. For the guy who said the 80s were the last good rock and no one besides Nirvana & Bush could compete, off the top of my head:

    Pearl Jam
    Soundgarden
    Alice In Chains
    Gomez
    The Tragically Hip
Our Lady Peace [90s stuff not the crybaby emo stuff they do now]
    Black Crowes
    Blind Melon
    Rage Against The Machine
    Ben Harper
Green Day [once again 90s stuff not gay emo shit]
    Mad Season
    Temple Of the Dog
    Offspring
    Matt Good Band

I bet I could name tonnes more if I thought about it for more than one minute

  98. Mark on March 8th, 2007 1:19 pm

you know who is Better Than Ezra? Everybody.
The forgotten bands of the 90’s are the ones that made an impact on listeners and who weren’t fortunate enough to be played on the radio.

  99. theman on March 8th, 2007 1:51 pm

There were countless great rockbands in the 90ies but none of them is on your list.
Candlebox? Gin Blossoms?WTF? Nobody who was into rock seriously listened to that crap.
    How about some real music…

  100. Eric Hebert on March 8th, 2007 1:55 pm

It amazes me that people fail to read the titles of the articles they are reading! Oh, and this guy still listens to that “crap”. I’m sure you’re a fine musician though.

  101. Jeff on March 8th, 2007 9:54 pm

Though I was born on Jan 6th, 1991 and some of you may not think of me as a 90’s kid I was. And I still am to this day, these songs bring back so many memories. Long live the 90’s!

  102. Walhallen on March 9th, 2007 1:11 pm

  103. jim wilikers on March 9th, 2007 1:52 pm

who in fuck thinks collective soul is forgotten.. the are played on ever single radio station everyday. The continue to produce records… one is coming out on March 20th.

  104. Pramod on March 14th, 2007 2:16 am

    Counting Crows ?

  105. Tiago on March 15th, 2007 10:20 am

Hi. Just to say that Silverchair is NOT forgotten, at least in Portugal. Many Rock pubs here along the beach play it and, since I hear it since ‘95 I love it yet, despite that all.

  106. anti-folk hero on March 15th, 2007 5:06 pm

Awesome call on the Gin Blossoms. They were the most underrated band of that time period. They have some kind of intensely negative stigma around them for some reason, but they write perfect pop songs. Nice list.

  107. Chase on March 18th, 2007 1:25 am

Great list! Brings back some good memories from the 90s.

  108. Susie on March 25th, 2007 12:17 pm

I could never forgot the Gin Blossoms. They are mu all time favorite band. Still to this day listen to their old and new stuff every day. Them breaking up briefly did not stop me from being a true fan.

  109. Amanda on March 26th, 2007 10:16 pm

may I suggest another? the Toadies. fits right in with the ones you have on here. Candlebox I nearly forgot about. these were my musical glory days.
right now im looking for mystery machine and happened upon your blog. there is a song that still rings in my head from 12ish years ago… maybe you can help me…. it goes
“if you could get a smile out of a dollar bill
*I don’t know bout you but that would be a thrill*
id rather stare at you instead of my tv
will you ever come back to me”
    * {unsure of the lyrics here}

I always called it the dollar bill one… do you have any idea?

  110. Eric Hebert on March 27th, 2007 9:04 am

I will be doing a post shortly about the Toadies, because they seem to be a fan favorite here at evolvor. As far as your song, I’d have to here it to remember I guess. You should check this out; maybe it’ll help you.

thought I was the only one who remembered Toad the Wet Sprocket. I first heard em on the Friends soundtrack…lots of great bands have gotten completely forgotten, Collective Soul had a single called “Counting the Days” a few years ago that got a decent amount of attention, then was quickly forgotten

  117. joe on September 5th, 2007 7:20 am

u for got the red hot chili peppers bro..nice songs nyways

  118. jennarationx on September 5th, 2007 8:54 am

Great list. Toadie is still a fav. along with Replacements, Pixies (anyone?), Live (love!)…

I had an alternative CD in the early 1990’s that I can NOT remember the name of the band or the album (lame, I know) but the cover had a picture of a large silver throne (empty) — and I’m pretty sure it WASN’T Silverchair. Guy singer. Alterna-pop, along the lines of Posies or Spin Doctors. And it probably wouldn’t be on anyone’s 10 best list, but it was awfully catchy in its own way. Anybody have any ideas?

  119. Jim Dandy on September 17th, 2007 10:44 pm

Don’t forgotten Semisonic and their wistful Pop-Rock hit “Closing Time.” also Marcy Playground
and their hiy “Sex and Candy”.

  120. Jim Dandy on September 17th, 2007 10:48 pm

The 90’s were alot more fertile period creatively speaking than the 80’s were.
The best thing about the 80’s was the underground
Punk/Alternative movement that laid the groundwork for the 90’s.Im talking about Black Flag,Husker Du,Dead Kennedy’s,Jason & the Scorchers,Big Black,Scratch Acid,Fugazi and too many more than I can even name.

  125. CHRIST ALMIGHTY on November 1st, 2007 2:26 pm

SERIOUSLY, YOUR WHOLE LIST BLOWS MY COCK. NONE OF THOSE BANDS WERE WORTH A SHIT. MOST PEOPLE INTO THOSE BANDS ARE THE SAME LAME ASS BITCHES THAT MADE SHIT ACTS LIKE HOOTIE MILLIONAIRES. YOU WERE A HIP 90′S DOUCHE IF YOU LIKE THESE TALENTLESS ONE NOTE PONY ASS BANDS, ESPECIALLY THE FUCKING GIN BLOSSOMS. GET SOME REAL BANDS IN YOU MP3, STOP SUCKING THE PRICKS OF DEAD TALENTLESS BANDS NOW SERVING ME MY FUCKING COFFEE @ DAZBOG.

  126. Eric Hebert on November 1st, 2007 4:23 pm

That would be an awesome band name! Christ Almighty! 100 bucks says this clown can’t play any Gin Blossoms songs (I never said they were hard to play or anything, and no, neither can I) let alone write anything themselves.

It erks the shit out of me when people SCREAM about how shit sucks.

We pick apart these people every fucking day and it’s a shame.

If a plumber comes in and fixes your toilet, do you pick him apart?

“That plumber fucking blows - my water just doesn’t flush the same as it used to” or

“That plumber BLOWS man he’s no Jimmy Page” or whatever

Don’t come to my house and tell me the Gin Blossoms sucks.

No, they didn’t create some earth shattering or didn’t record the cure for cancer.

They made some catchy as tunes that ALOT of people bob there heads to and sing along in their cars everyday.

Oh and btw, if these guys r millionares, why are they serving you coffee?

  127. CHRIST ALMIGHTY on November 1st, 2007 5:49 pm

THANKS FOR THE COMMENT, HERBIE. BEING AN ASSCLOWN W/ NO TASTE DOES GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO ENJOY SHIT BANDS. THIS, IN TURN, WILL NO DOUBT HAVE YOU STAND ON A SOAP BOX AND PREACH ABOUT HOW GREAT THIS NO TALENT HACKS ARE. FOR THE RECORD, I WILL DEFINITELY SAY SHIT ABOUT MY PLUMBER IF HE IN FACT SUCKS “AS A PLUMBER”, YOU FUCKING DIPSHIT. THE SAME WAY I SAY THESE BANDS SUCK “AS BANDS”, GET IT? PROBABLY NOT!!! THE LEAD SINGER OF THE GIN BLOSSOMS DOES SERVE ME COFFEE, SIMPLY BECAUSE HE RAN THROUGH THE MONEY MADE FROM SOULLESS WINDBAGS SUCH AS YOUR SELF. LET’S NOT FORGET HOW THE COCKSUCKING BAND STOLE THEIR CRAPPY MATERIAL FROM ANOTHER BAND MEMBER WHO ENDED UP KILLING HIMSELF OVER THE BACKSTABBING. GREAT FUCKING BAND INDEED.

  128. Eric Hebert on November 1st, 2007 6:04 pm

It must be mention that Mr. Almighty cannot read, for I never mention the word “great” in my post about Gin.

I’m really interested in seeing the story of Gilmore come to more of a light, as I don’t think many people know about it either.

You’re obviously a relative of him cause you really really hate this band, wow!

BTW, take caps lock off my ears hurt.

And don’t get on me about the music I listened to when I was twelve. If it’s such a big deal, why don’t you start your own blog and tell us all about your issues?

  129. CHRIST ALMIGHTY on November 1st, 2007 6:17 pm

IT’S MORE FUN TO YELL ON YOURS, HERBBIE!!!!!! OH YEAH, “IT MUST BE MENTION”, I THINK I READ WELL ENOUGH TO NOTICE THAT YOU CAN NOT SPELL, LOVE YOU, GUY!!

  138. andy on February 17th, 2008 12:17 am

I don’t remember any of these bands… then again I was only 4. I remember Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers… that’s it right now. Pittsburgh B94 used to play good songs like these, then they started playing nothing but (c)rap.

  139. Phenobarbidoll on March 3rd, 2008 1:21 am

I remember a lot of the bands that were mentioned in the list, and a lot of the ones people were commenting on. It made me realise there was a time when the “cool” bands of the day actually had a smidgen of talent. (Whether you like them or not, you have to admit, the bands that are popular nowadays have nowhere near the talent).

And I think we forget someone who did hit his peak of popularity in the nineties (unfortunately, as I did get to see him this summer and he was quite good): Marilyn Manson.

He changed the face of rock, for better or for worse, but forever.

  140. Eric Hebert on March 3rd, 2008 2:44 am

Changed the face of rock? Sheesh. Manson was a circus act that never impressed me.

  141. Korenski on April 3rd, 2008 8:23 pm

I remember most of these bands. What about Tripping Daisy and Lush?! Manson…he was just a ticked off Ohioan.

**I’ve been trying to remember this band for ages and it’s driving me insane, all i can remember is that they were a group in the early-mid nineties (poss 92-94) and that one of the songs on the album had a soundbyte from Apocalypse Now at the beginning, you know the Marlon Brando speech “I watched a snail crawl across the edge of a straightrazor slithering……”
