Pushin Crap Products and Services Online

Lately I have been snooping around all kinds of online ad networks, whether they be contextual, CPM banner networks, or affiliate networks. While researching the affiliate ad industry, the following products or services often rear their ugly heads into the picture. I refer to these as “crap”, ’cause that’s what they are. If you’re thinking about starting an online business, you may want to reconsider venturing into any if these industries:

• Pharmaceutical - Many networks exist promising big bucks for those who push thousands of different types of drugs. If you like playing upon people’s insecurities about their bodies or minds, then go right ahead.

• Poker / Casino - This one’s easy: your target market has a gambling problem, and you just might go to jail!

• Dating / Adult Classifieds - Giving losers with no social skills false hope in finding that special someone has never been easier.

• Porn - Do I really have to say anything ? Again, get a lawyer; you’re gonna need one.

• Health Insurance - Many of these companies prey on us without insurance by offering little benefits with lots of “conditions.” Again, taking advantage of the uneducated.

• Surveys - Promises, promises; I love making people jump through rings of fire to get that Ipod that they really will never get.

• Home Business Advice - It seems like everybody is making millions online these days. It must be that easy, just buy some cd’s and the money starts flowing in!

• Ebay - In the same vein as the home biz advice, I’m really tired of the “I made millions selling shit on ebay” product. Or maybe I’m just jealous I didn’t make those millions.

• Debt Consolidation - They’ll help those hopeless souls in mountains of debt by putting them in even more debt. Great job.

I’m not saying I’m an angel, and yes, there have even been times where I was tempted or even went as far to set up a domain to push one of these services. It’s just that there are so many people out there trying to push these on us, especially through spamming email and blog comments, that being mentioned in the same sentence makes me sick.

If you’re serious about making a name for yourself online, especially in the online marketing industry, I suggest staying away from these; they just make you look money hungry and one dimensional. Many of these services offer high payouts because their products are hard sells. They make their money because they have hundreds if not thousands of marketers who get a few sales here and there. The marketers don’t really make anything but the company does, much like a multi-level or network marketing outfit.

Do yourself a favor and find a niche site that has subject matter you can really enjoy. It will make your work mean so much more than just the money and it will show. Plus, you’ll have the admiration and respect of your peers and your industry.
