One of the first steps in incorporating advertising into your website or blog is determining the sizes of ad that will appear. You want to make sure that these ads fit properly and don’t overlap or look out of place. A good rule of thumb and a great display of the major ad formats used throughout the industry can be found on the Google Adsense site.
Many different theories exist about ad placement and color schemes that can increase an ad’s click thorough rate. I think most important is that your ads have a similar “feel” and relevancy for your site, other wise they’ll just make you look like an amatuer.
When we started our beer blog, we originally had Google Adsense image ads. The algorithm, along with types of companies bidding on related keywords, were turning out either undesirable, cheese-ball ads or ads that, while relevant, just didn’t fit. We switched to text ads last week and they are 10 times as more relevant, and fit perfectly with our site.
So, while the image ads may have “looked” better, they weren’t relevant to our audience. Keep this in mind if you decide to ad similar generated ads on your site.
