Most of us know about MyBlogLog, a kind of MySpace meets bloggers service that connects the blogging world together. One of the cool things about MyBlogLog is the reader widget you can add to your blog. Whenever someone comes to your site (either through MyBlogLog or while “logged in” to the service ), their picture/avatar will be featured along with their name or brand/nickname. Now, if your a smart kat like myself, your name/nickname is also your brand/company/url name. What does all this mean? Free advertising!

That’s right, every time I visit my favorite blogs that feature the MyBlogLog reader, my face gets a little block along with my name on that site. It also doesn’t hurt to be good looking and/or have a unique picture that stands out a little. And if anybody knows anything about marketing and branding, one of the first rules is repetition. After someone sees your mug enough times, their gonna see that your all over the place and start asking questions about you. Maybe they’ll click on your photo and join your contacts list or Google your name to find out some dirt on you. Wonderful stuff. I’ll take a free ad on TechCrunch or Marketing Pilgrim any day of the week!

Things to remember:

Use a real picture of yourself. I really don’t know why people use silly avatars, logos, or pictures of Homer Simpson (Yeah I’m talking to you Rebecca!) on their blogs. In this world of robots, computers, and other soul-less devices, seeing somebody’s smile is the most important thing. It shows that you are alive and not some spam robot or swindler; it adds credibility to what ever you are doing.

Think about your name. This goes along with everything else you do in your daily activities online, in regards to your job or business. For example, I’m known as “evolvor” all over the net. It’s my nickname, yes, but it’s also my URL and my company name. I’ve been building my brand since day one, and so should you. Either use your real name or use a company name, if it’s not too long (which if you have studied branding principals you know is the wrong way to go.)
